Great Gear – The Benefits of Slacklining

In our new series of Great Gear posts, we’re going to take a look at the various bits of kit out there that can help you to become a better athlete, improve peformance and reduce injury. First up – the humble slackline –  one of the greatest cross training and rehabilitation tools of all time. Whilst the most extreme of slackliners grab the headlines for the awe-inspiring backflips and tricks performed high above the ground, millions of ‘normal’ folks can also be found enjoying the sport in gardens and parks all over the world and having Continue reading →

Trail Running – A Journey Begins

In just a few months time I will be standing on the start line of the OCC (Orsiéres – Champex – Chamonix), a 53km trail running race that makes up part of the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) week in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France. Not only is 53km a really long way in anyone’s book, the race also involves a few extra ‘speed bumps’ along the way – in particular a positive height gain of 3,300 meters. Eek. My running background is not exactly that of an elite athlete – I did Continue reading →

Good intentions – trying to stay active while at a conference

Singapore – a great but expensive conference venue As part of our other lives Rachael and I regularly attend international conferences in some interesting places. However rather than being a glamorous activity, living in a conference hotel, eating buffets and spending the day stood on an exhibition stand networking is not conducive to feeling fit and healthy. So when we book the hotel we are always keen to have access to a good gym facility and perhaps a pool, promising ourselves that this time it Continue reading →

Just because the ski season is over doesn’t mean that your SkiFit training should end!

Two weeks ago we saw the final skiing at the Grand Montets ski area in our home town of Chamonix and while some of us will be heading to the high glacial alpine venues or even further a field in the Southern Hemisphere to continue to satisfy the need to ski this summer, most of us will be hanging up our boots and planks until next season.  But here’s the thing – contrary to popular belief, this doesn’t mean that the SkiFit training should end!! The exercises in Continue reading →

Respect for this ‘Stay Strong Mommy’

So I’m probably the most unfit member of our BeFitApps team, for the moment at least! I’m a ‘Mum-Entrepreneur’ trying to do it all but essentially putting everyone first before themselves and failing to look after myself. They aren’t enough hours in the day to accomplish everything you want to, should do and aspire to. However sometimes you see something and someone that makes you think ‘Come on!’ time to adjust the balance and get your act together Mommy!. Although I’m a firm advocate of following Continue reading →

First sportive of the year – La Petite Bisou

The weather is turning and its time to get out and blow away the cobwebs and start getting seriously fit for the summer. For me the first serious outing is La Petite Bisou sportive which is a fabulous local event with excellent organisation. You really do feel like a professional cyclist with the start/finish gantries, motorbike outriders, roadside spectators and rolling road closures. However, at this time of year even a 75km event is enough to really tire the legs and body which are unaccustomed Continue reading →

Swim prehab for the shoulder – ‘Scapular retraction’

Do you suffer from a shoulder injury? Watch this video in which Neil talks you through an exercise called ‘scapular retraction’. Using our model, Fiona Ford of Triathlon Europe, Neil’s shows you how to promote good shoulder blade position, improving technique and preventing injury. A common injury in swimmers is in the shoulder (rotator cuff) due to continuous rotation and usage. As opposed to a single incident, injury to the rotator cuff in swimmers can be a result of repeated trauma and overuse. Our swim screening and Continue reading →
