Obligatory Equipment Lists, Top Tip #1 Adhesive bandage

The town of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is welcoming ultra-runners from around the World, registered in one of the most demanding ultra-trail running events you can find – the UTMB (Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc)  events include:

UTMB (Chamonix-Courmayeur-Chamonix) 171km, 10,000 mt+
TDS (Courmayeur-Chamonix) 119km, 7,200 mt+
CCC (Courmayeur-Champez-Chamonix) 101km, 6,100 mt+
OCC (Orsieres-Chamonix) 56km, 3,500 mt+
PTL (Chamonix-Chamonix) 2901km, 26,500 mt+

Like the majority of endurance races, runners have to carry an obligatory list of equipment  and for some it could be the first time they’ve carried or used certain items. It goes without saying that if you’re carrying a piece of the obligatory kit make sure you know how to use it, if caught in an emergency situation it could save valuable time and effort.

For instance included in the obligatory equipment list for the UTMB is the ¨Adhesive elastic band enable making a bandage or a strapping (mini 100cm x 6 cm)¨. Strictly speaking to follow the elastic adhesive bandage this is the type of strapping to go for. It comes in 2.5cm, 5cm, 7.5cm and 10cm so the 7.5cm is the necessary (for the very keen you can cut it down to 6cm) and make it 100cm in length.

A great tip for packing the tape is to actually wrap it around a plastic card (like a bank card or loyalty card). This keeps is flat which is much easier for packing and comfortable for running – it also means to have an emergency bank card – always good for long training runs when you will be practicing with your race kit. Again it goes without saying that you should practice using the tape before leaving so you know what to do if needed.

And, whatever time of year it is, it’s a great idea to sign up to our RunFit programme. Our screening protocols enable you to assess your own strengths and weakness, before starting prehab and core work which gives you the specific strength, mobility and control to allow you to run more efficiently.

Finally, enjoy your race!
